How to: Make a Beautiful Personalised Map

Pick a location that is special to you. I made my friends from uni Sheffield maps for their birthday to remember all the fun we had there.

Step 1: Buy frame(s), mount(s) and map(s). It works out cheaper to do a few at once as you buy the mounts in bulk and group delivery so lower postage.

Frame & mount

Make sure they are the right sizes to fit together! You could even do a bigger or a smaller version.

Personally I like  white frames and you can also buy them on the high street like this one from Wilko. But you could equally use a wood frame, black or metallic.

I bought the mounts on Amazon but you can also get them on eBay.  I chose whit ebut you could get a cream mount.

Find a second hand map on eBay – see below for some examples. Make sure they are in quite good condition. If you’re clever you can get maybe 2 out of a map. This worked for me as I was able to use the places we lived and then also the town centre with ‘Sheffield’ on.

Step 2: Put together! You will need scissors and masking tape. Cut the map so that it’s 1 cm bigger than the heart hole. Tape onto the back, map facing forward then put into frame. The mount means there’s a nice neat line.

Step 3: Give your gifts / keep for yourself!

Cost: £7.50 -£10

Time: 1 hour, you will need to allow for delivery times however!
